Camp Independence is run by the YMCA of Metro Chicago in association with the Illinois Spina Bifida Association. It is an overnight summer camp designed especially for people with spina bifida, age 7 through adult. Campers are encouraged to learn self-care skills, develop new friendships, and try new adaptive sports.
We are delighted to share news from the YMCA on the following 2026 Summer Session dates for Camp Independence!
Session 1: June 14–19 – Adult (20+)
Session 2: June 21–26 – Teen (14–19)
Session 3: June 28–July 1 – Youth (7–13, Mini Session)
Session 4: July 5–10 – Teen (14–19)
Session 5: July 12–17 – Youth (7–13)
Session 6: July 19–24 – Adult (20+)
Session 7: August 2–7 – Youth (7–13)
Save the Date — Registration and Financial Assistance applications will open in early January 2026.
The YMCA will share more information as the dates get closer. Families are encouraged to begin thinking about which session is best for their camper.
Register Now for the 2026 Camp Independence Open House
The YMCA invites all families, new and returning to attend a 2026 Open House to tour camp, meet YMCA staff, and get a feel for what makes Camp Independence so special. The YMCA encourages you to invite a friend with spina bifida who may be interested in experiencing overnight camp for the first time. The Open House is a perfect way to introduce new families to the Camp Independence community.
